Author Biographies

• Mattias De Backer, Vrije Universiteit Brussel

  Mattias De Backer is guest professor and postdoctoral researcher at Vrije Universiteit Brussel and editor-in-chief of the open-access journal Criminological Encounters. He is a transdisciplinary researcher, travelling between criminology, sociology, philosophy and geography, holding a Master’s degree in Philosophy and Urban Studies, and a PhD in Criminology. Mattias works on topics related to youth, the city and migration and has an interest in creative/participatory methods and poststructuralist philosophy.

   

• Lucas Melgaço

  Lucas Melgaço is Associate Professor in the Department of Criminology at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). His main scientific interests are in the domains of urban criminology, surveillance studies, policing and technology, public spaces and public order. He is editor-in-chief of the journal Criminological Encounters.

   

• Lior Volinz

  Lior Volinz is a post-doctoral researcher at the Crime and Society (CRiS) research group of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium). His research interests includes surveillance and policing technologies, digital governance, and the privatization and pluralization of security provision. Lior holds a PhD from the University of Amsterdam (2019), where he defended his dissertation at the department of Human Geography, Urban Planning and International Development. Lior is an associate editor of the journal Criminological Encounters.
